Session 48
[GAME STARTS HERE]
DUNGEON MASTER: It is now 4:30 in the
morning. The city watch have confirmed
that it is safe to return the beast to their protective custody in the
courthouse jail. They have confirmed the
party's role in the events (although no one is yet aware that Solar killed a
member of the mob), and no one is laying blame on either the party or the beast
at this time. Judging by the reports the
party has overheard, it appears the courthouse took some damage but is still
standing.
GRUNDIG: grundig asks if there is any cots
some floor space to rest for what remains the morning
DUNGEON MASTER: The priests acquiesce and show
the party into a smaller chamber designed to house iterant priests from other
orders.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar says to his companions,
SHould we get everything we need to do done before we go to bed? That way we can have everything done ready
for th trial and then get some sleep.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Let's make a
short detour back to the household to collect a few items that we need before
we retire for the night. This will also give us a chance to let our friend know
we are ok," replies Johan.
SOLAR CE’NEA: I agree. However lets be weary and make sure noone is
watching or following us.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Falling Damage from
Jumping from the 1st level of the courthouse:
Johan: 1d6 = 5 hp
dmg
Mesodias: 1d6 = 3 hp
dmg
DUNGEON MASTER: The party heads back through
the foggy, empty streets to the townhouse, where they are greeted by the butler
and shown upstairs.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Whilst the rest of the party
gets the belongings they need, Solar explains the nights events to Kendra and
emphasises the need for her to be careful today. When the court reconvens there may still be
remenants of the angry mob and they may lash out at whoever is available.
SOLAR CE’NEA: With that he getly takes her
head in his hands and kisses her forehead and then leaves.
DUNGEON MASTER: Kendra is a little sleepy eyed
and groggy, but she listens carefully to Solar's warning and asks him to take
care.
DUNGEON MASTER: However, even in her drowsy
state, she responds warmly to Solar's kiss.
GRUNDIG: grundig gose tho the icebox and grabs
the bag of heads (trophys) out and swings it over his sholder and struts out
with a spring in his step
DUNGEON MASTER: The party collects the heads
and heads back to the temple.
DUNGEON MASTER: It's about 5:15 am now.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "I believe
speaking to Doctor Brada would be the most useful in regards to questioning
them, however we may need to identify them first," replies Johan as they
discuss Speak with the Dead.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar aids another to Grundig
for his heal check 1d20+0=19
GRUNDIG: grundig trys to Determine who the
heads might have belonged to.
heal check 1d20+8=26
GRUNDIG: +2 for aid another=28
DUNGEON MASTER: Based on the descriptions he's
recieved, Grundig is able to locate the head that most likely belonged to Dr.
Brada. Most of the other heads are less
recognizable, though a few of them show signs of deformities.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar asks the Pharasma priests
if someone is avaialable to speak with dead and that this is very important for
the last day of the trial.
GRUNDIG: grundig grabs the head of the most
likly candadate and holds it up with one hand on its chin and moves its jaw up
and down doing his best attempt at a ventriliqist act "hellow my name is
dr Brada"
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar just shakes his head
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan smiles at the
macabre display however he quickly conceals his amusement when one of the gruff
priests look his way.
DUNGEON MASTER: The priests take the party and
the head into a separate room and prepare to cast speak with dead on the
subject. This time Johan is selected as
the target of the spell.
A red nimbus engulfs
the head, and the priest motions for Johan to begin.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan steps forward
into the centre of the room as he clears his throat in preparation of
questioning the late Doctor.
"Who are
you?"
DUNGEON MASTER: "I am Dr. Elben
Brada."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan silently nods
at this news.
"What were the
circumstances of your death?"
DUNGEON MASTER: "I was slain by a large
mongrelman, who I suspect was in the employ of one Vorkstag."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "What was your
business relationship with Vorkstag & Grine?"
DUNGEON MASTER: "I sold them cadavers of
patients after they passed away, in exchange for financial support and supplies
to keep my clinic operational."
DUNGEON MASTER: The nimbus of light fades, as
does the scratching quill of the stenographer.
GRUNDIG: well that should help link them to
the crime
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Yes it seems
Doctor Brada's business relationship went foul however Vorgstag and Grine's
failed to silence the truth from him," replies Johan.
DUNGEON MASTER: The party retires to the guest
cell and enjoys a well-deserved sleep.
It is 9:00 am when the priests come as requested to awaken the party
from their slumber.
GRUNDIG: grundig awakens and asks the preasts
if there is somewhere he can light a small fire for his morning prairs
DUNGEON MASTER: One of the black-robed priests
shows Grundig to a brazier, filled with coals to help warm the temple in
winter.
GRUNDIG: grundig talks to the others letting
them know that he wishes to spend time praying to his gods to reguvernate his
powers and will be about 30 minuts late
to the court. he then starts his morning ritual after he dresses in his good
cloths and hurrys to court carring the rest of his gear to tne court house
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar suggests telling the
barristers what they know and what they intend to do during the trial. Solar
also suggests telling the barrister in a secure room which we have searched to
make sure no-one is lestening and no spells have been cast to listen in on
their conversation (Solar is starting to get a little bit paranoid)
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan will provide
the Barrister with the items of interest they intend to use as evidence during
the court hearing.
DUNGEON MASTER: Barrister Kaple stutters in
shock as Johan explains the results of his investigations. "T-t-that's not believable!" he
says at at last. "I-I'll add them
to the testimony list!"
DUNGEON MASTER: The party freshens up, with
ample assistance from Solar's presdigitation.
While Grundig remains behind to memorize his spells, the remaining
heroes head to the courthouse and prepare for the final day of the trial.
DUNGEON MASTER: The final day of the Trial of
the Beast begins at 10:00 am sharp. Chief Justice Khard reminds the crowd of
the penalties of violence, and tells them that he will clear the entire court
if they do not behave. "Mobs do not rule Lepidstadt," he warns.
"Should anyone threaten violence to any of the defense, I will
have the person
whipped out of town or hanged." He
pauses and looks meaningfully up at the still-scorched balcony where a very
grim-faced group of citizens are peering down on the court.
With that, he
requests the prosecution to describe the alleged events at Sanctuary.
DUNGEON MASTER: The prosecution loses no time
in calling Karl Bulgrad to the stand.
The man feels his way forward with a cane, takes his seat, and explains
in detail how the good Dr. Brada founded Sanctuary, how he served the doctor,
and of the many good deeds they did together to help the poor folk of
Lepidstadt who have been afflicted with deformities. He then proceeds to describe the events of
the night Sanctuary burned--how the beast came, slew the doctor, and burned the
building to the ground with the patients still inside. With only a trace of bitterness, he tells how
his last memory before his eyesight was lost forever was the image of the beast
lumbering off into the darkness.
DUNGEON MASTER: With that, the court calls for
the Defense to make their case. As
before, the good Barrister Kaple rises and, in his ever-stuttering voice, calls
Johan D'Almenta to the stand.
DUNGEON MASTER: Grundig slips int the court
just as Johan prepares to testify.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan stands as he
straightens his court attire, proceeding to provide the evidence they had
collected. He greets the magistrate and court before proceeding.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Ustalav >
Sanctuary Isle:
Four undead (ghasts)
were found wearing straight jackets within an underground chamber nearby the
burnt ruins of Sanctuary Isle. They were not burnt, not having perished within
the flames they attacked us. We found the remains of several patients including
Doctor Brada.
* metal chest with
charred paperwork refer to 'Vorkstag & Grine's Chymic Works'.
* unbroken vial that
is labelled with 'Vorkstag and Grine, Chymic Bleach'.
Ustalav > Morast
> Tool Hunt:
* Discovered fine
surgery tools used to remove the face of one of the victims, Nan Klebem.
* Tools made by
craftsman that operate in the Surgeons' Flats
* Those tools made
by Zbraslav Hora and Sons in the Anatomists' Alley
* Vladka Kostel
purchased the tools.
* Vladka Kostel
works for Ledov's Chirurgery Merchants.
* Ledov's Chirurgery
sold the tools to Radniche from the Surgeon's Flat.
* A dapper fellow of
Vorkstag & Grine's Chymic Works purchased the tools.
Ustalav >
Vorkstag & Grine's Chymic Works:
* Upon finding
strong evidence from the Sanctuary Isle linking Vorkstag & Grine's from the
fine surgery tools used to remove the face of one of the victims, Nan Klebem
from Morast, we approached the business to gather information before the court.
Upon being allowed entrance into the courtyard, and then the main access into
the warehouse we were attacked by a flesh golem hound, mongrelman and Vorstag
and Grine's themselves. We defended ourselves as best we could as any man would
do so and what we discovered within will be spoken of for generations to
follow. Sick, depraved, evil, these words simply can not describe the macabre
and corrupted playground of Vorkstag & Grine. They had an assortment of
alchemal labs setup which reinforces the discovery at Morast, where we had
found the empty vial of a darkvision alchemy potion and the masterwork surgery
tools used at Morast.
* A book was found
within Vorkstag & Grine's that appears to be a ledger recording the
transactions of Vorkstag & Grine. An inspection reveals that the pair is
involved in the trafficking of corpses to customers all over Ustalav.
* My companions and
I discovered hidden within a storage room, an assortment of alchemical items
including six bottles of bleach with the same labels as the one found in the
Sanctuary Isle.
* A cabinet was
found that contained over a dozen skins. Notable skins include the missing
Miller of Hargen; Borgo Znojmo, a respected and reclusive Lepidstadt merchant;
Doctor Katarina Vilt, an esteemed lecturer at Lepidstadt University; and
countless others both missing or still occasionally seen. And hanging at the
front is a grotesque, deformed skin of a 8-foot-tall mongrelman, made up of
flesh, fur, and scales and covered with fungal boils and hideous puss-filled
eruptions.
* The leather book
found within the Chymic Works proves to be a second ledger detailing customers
who have purchased stolen cadavers and anatomical parts from Vorkstag and
Grine. Many of the names are local doctors and scholars, but two names stand
out: Doctor Brada of Sanctuary, and one Auren Vrood, W.W.
* The basement of
the warehouse was found to contain the bodies of several people, we did not
linger long enough to identify the innocents we found within this room.
Ustalav >
Sanctuary Isle >Speak with Dead -> Doctor Elben Brada:
* With the divine
aid from the priests of Pharasma, we were able to question the late Doctor
Brada from Sanctuary:
Question one:
"Who are you?"
Reply: "I am
Dr. Elben Brada."
Question Two:
"What were the circumstances of your death?"
Reply: "I was
slain by a large mongrelman, who I suspect was in the employ of one
Vorkstag."
Question Three:
"What was your business relationship with Vorstag & Grine?"
Reply: "I sold
them cadavers of patients after they passed away, in exchange for financial
support to keep my clinic operational."
* The Doctor Brada
was one of the many victims of Vorgstag & Grine, they however failed in
their attempt to silence the truth from the Doctor once they had completed
their business dealings. Vorgstag & Grine's concealed their activities by
using a skin from a large mongrelman as a plan to setup The Beast up as the one
responsible. This same large mongrel man we imply was responsible for the
incident that occurred at Morast given the amount of evidence previously
provided. We claim without any hesitation that The Beast is innocent of all
charges.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: During his speech,
Johan will provide the court with the display of the grotesque mongrelman skin
as an important part of the evidence.
DUNGEON MASTER: The court is deathly quiet as
Johan presents the heroes' findings to the town of Lepidstadt. Today there are no shouts or jeers from the
balcony; just sullen acceptance that the townsfolk are powerless to prevent the
gears of justice from turning as they will.
When Johan holds up the mongrelman skin, there is a tense moment, as the
entire court is disturbed and whispers to one another like autumn leaves in a
sharp breeze; but then all goes quiet again.
When at long last Johan finishes, there is an awkward silence, broken at
length by the stern voice of Chief Justice Kharb.
"The court
thanks you for your testimony, Mr. D'Almenta.
The court is adjourned for the the judges to deliberate; we will
reconvene in three hours' time."
His gavel raps against the podium and the sound is quite loud against
the uncomfortable silence that reigns in the courtroom.
DUNGEON MASTER: It is about 2 in the
afternoon.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan returns to his
companions, "Might I suggest we hang around here for a moment or two
longer? If you know what I mean."
GRUNDIG: i think that waiting it out in here
would be a good idear if we can
SOLAR CE’NEA: I agree, my friend, I am worried
another mob will form. I hope they
haven't had time to repair the windows we used to get on and off the roof
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Mesodias writes the
word "Pray" with an arrow draw to himself on his chalk board.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: He then seeks a
quite place in one of the empty rooms or lobby where he can pray to the glory
thatis Gorum, his lord of iron.
GRUNDIG: "can you do it here my
friend"
DUNGEON MASTER: Grundig finds a largely empty
room on the second floor, and proceeds to work to regain his spells.
The remiander of the
party waits at the defence's table as the hours lengthen. Although it is not clear from within the
courthouse, a quick peek or two outside confirms that a crowd is gathering in
the square to hear the outcome of the trial and to see the Horrid Beast of
Lepidstadt finally burn on the Punishing Man.
Numerous tankards and kegs of beer and cider are in evidence.
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar rests for the duration of
the break. He still needs 3 hours rest for the interupptions to his rest to
regain his spells
SOLAR CE’NEA: Redacted above. Solar has rested sufficently to regain all
but one grease spell
DUNGEON MASTER: Minutes turn to hours. At about 4:30 pm a large detachment of armed
soldiers arrives from a nearby barracks, each armed with large polearms with
which they form a protective formation about the feet of the steps up to the
Lepdistadt Courthouse.
DUNGEON MASTER: Finally, at 5:00 pm, the
judges walk quietly back into the courtroom, their black robes trailing on the
floor. Chief Justice Khard bangs his
gavel once again against the podium and calls the court back into order. His voice rings over the tense silence.
"The being
known as the "Beast of Lepidstadt" stands accused of three crimes:
Murder and Rape of the Citizens of Morast; Murder Most Foul of the Children of
Hergstag; and Murder, Arson, and Wanton Destruction of the Clinic at Karb Isle."
"Of the first
crime, we find the Beast of Lepidstadt Not Guilty."
"Of the second
crime, we find the Beast of Lepidstadt Not Guilty."
"Of the third
crime, we find the Beast of Lepdistadt Not Guilty."
There is a stunned
silence in the courtroom, as the reality of this judgement sinks in. Finally, Justice Khard raps his gavel once
again.
"The Court is
Adjourned."
DUNGEON MASTER: There is a whisper through the
crowd that gradually grows into a sound that resembles a swarm of angry
bees. Outside it grows louder into a
loud series of calls and then screams and angry bellows. A squadron of well armed guardsmen unshackle
the Beast from its chair and prepare to lead it out the front door.
It looks up at Johan
with the ever-present leer etched across its face. "I will go see Father now," it
bellows over the noise of the mob outside.
GRUNDIG: grundig speaks up at the guards who
look like taking the beast out the front door "i dont think that would be
a good idear to take the beast out the front door unless you wish to be
responsable for the crowd to linch him in the street.
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar speaks to the beast, I can
cast invisability on you if the crowd becomes a problem. So if you feel a spell
being cast on you don't resist it, I am only trying to help.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Do you understand?
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "I think it
would be best to avoid any scene outside of the court for all involved. However
before you leave if you don't mind sparing a few minutes I would like to ask
who father is and what you plan to do now?"
DUNGEON MASTER: The beast nods at Solar, and
the guards step aside to permit him full access to the Beast.
DUNGEON MASTER: "I cannot speak his
name," says the beast with a shake of his head. "But you may follow me to his
home," adds the beast with a sly look.
SOLAR CE’NEA: We would like to to do that
friend (Solar emphasises the word friend to ensure the Beast knows he means it)
I would think we could be helpful to you to getting home, people may try to
follwo you. It would be helpful for you
to have witnesses such as us that believe your innocence.
GRUNDIG: it will be dificult to follow you
when you are invisable prhaps we could meet up with you somewhere out of town
and travel with you to your home.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Is your fathers home North,
south east or west of this town.
DUNGEON MASTER: "Meet me on the road to
the north."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Agreed. We
will meet you there as soon as possible."\
SOLAR CE’NEA: We will need to get our gear
before we met you, so if you get out and are able to hide yourself whilst still
being able to see the Northern road.
Give us perhaps 2 hours?
SOLAR CE’NEA: On seconds thoughts are you will
ing to wait for us somewhere tommorrow.
We will hve horses so we shuold be able to catch up to you quickly
DUNGEON MASTER: "The beast nods its
head. I will be watching the north road
tomorrow."
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar casts invisability on the
Beast once everyone is ready to make their way out
DUNGEON MASTER: The beast disappears from
sight, and the guards form a protective square formation and make their way
through the press of people outside.
DUNGEON MASTER: It takes several hours for the
guardsmen to disperse the mob in front of the courthouse, and it is
approximately 8 PM when the characters arrive back at the townhouse.
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar updates Kendra as to what
has happened and invites her to come with them as he is not sure how safe it is
in town (and of course he would love her company
GRUNDIG: grundig changes out of his fancy
cloths back into his traveling outfit
DUNGEON MASTER: Under cover of darkness, the
party makes their way to Judge Daramid's house in order to collect their
reward. They are ushered in, and
presently the stern, gray-haired woman comes to greet them.
"Welcome and
come in," she says with a warm smile.
"You did well--I am most impressed, and grateful. Petros was wise to trust you."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Thank you for
your kind words. We are all relieved The Beast was found innocent of all
charges in what was discovered to be an elaborate setup."
SOLAR CE’NEA: It is a pleasure to serve
justice my lady and to help an innocent to be set free.
DUNGEON MASTER: "Yes. Those papers you present to the court proved
to be most illuminating. I assume those
monsters kept these records in case they wanted to blackmail their clients
later. I noted that our own Count
Caromarc is on the list of business partners.
And this Mr. Vrood--I don't suppose I need to tell you that the W.W.
could stand for 'Whispering Way'."
"In any case,
both I and the town of Lepidstadt owe you a debt of gratitude for your service
to the cause of justice," she says, sliding a bag filled with the reward
money across the table.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar tries to remember what he
can about Count Caromarc Knowledge Local 1d20+15=30
DUNGEON MASTER: Solar is aware of the
following:
Schloss Caromarc is
the dwelling of Count Alpon Caromarc, the former ruler of Vieland who abdicated
his position when the Palatinates threw off the heavy yoke of the aristocracy.
An eccentric recluse, Count Caromarc has built a dwelling that both attracts
and deters visitors. Known as the Hanging House, Schloss Caromarc lies to the
northeast of Dippelmere Swamp, and is actually several buildings built into the
walls of a gorge above a waterfall. Although the lower parts of the house are
as luxurious as one might find in any city, the further up the gorge one goes,
the more treacherous and inhospitable the buildings become. The eccentric Count Caromarc is paranoid
about his experiments and discoveries being stolen, and it is rumored that he
has trapped parts of his castle to prevent theft.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Whilest I am
not a very spiritual man, I wish to add that the priests of Pharasma provided a
great service to us during the trial which I feel should be noted. They
assisted us without any agenda other then it was what they felt was the right
thing to do," replies Johan.
DUNGEON MASTER: "They will be pleased to
hear that, I think," she says with a smile.
DUNGEON MASTER: "You also did very well
in seeing the Beast out of the courthouse after the trial. I am... not proud of the way our citizens
behaved, but unfortunately not every person in Lepdistadt has had the benefit
of a good education and high station."
DUNGEON MASTER: "Do I assume correctly
that you intend to further assocaite with this beast and meet its so-called
'father'?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: Yes m'Lady we intend to see this
through and protect the beast as best we can.
DUNGEON MASTER: "You are good men, and
good friends," she says with a smile.
"I am very pleased indeed to have made your aquaintences--though I
wish it could have been under happier circumstances."
GRUNDIG: "we spent a bit of mony on
spells as part of the trile is there a chance of remitance of these
expences."
DUNGEON MASTER: She looks a bit sharply at the
gnome but then her expression softens. "Indeed? How much have you spent?"
GRUNDIG: we spent 540 gp on spells for the
three speek with dead spells for evedance in the trile
DUNGEON MASTER: "A notable sum,"
says Judge Daramid with a nod.
"I'll write you a note for that amount--you may cash the note at
the local accounting house in the morning.
And thank you," she says, passing a sheet of parchment over to the
party.
GRUNDIG: grundig takes the note thanking the
judge for everything and wishes her a peacfull night
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Thank you
again. It is getting late we wish you good night," Johan pushes his chair
back as they finish their dealing with the judge.
DUNGEON MASTER: Their business concluded, the
party leaves the house and proceeds back to the townhouse, where they enjoy an
uninterrupted night's rest. The next
morning dawns clear and blue-skyed, as clear as an autumn morning can be.
