Carrion Crown Session 47

Session 47
[GAME BEGINS HERE]
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Follow me, we need to wake the others and deal with this mess before it gets out of control," Johan says to Barrister Gustav. With that sorted he dashes up the staircase and wakes each of his companions up with a series of knocks on their doors. "Everyone up! No sleep for the wicked! We have unrest in the city square that needs out attention."
GRUNDIG: grundig streaches and cralls out of bed quickly dons his amor and gear and meets Johan out in the corridore "whats going on Johan"
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar wakes up quickly and grabs his pack  and weapons (which he hasn't yet had time to unpack) and joins Johan
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: As his companions stumble out of their bedroom, "It appears like the crowd has gathered and is causing a bit of trouble, so our riend has told us. I feel that we need to stop things from getting any worse. Johan doesn't look at Mesodias however this statement is for him, "These people are innocent, they are simply looking to blame someone and that person or thing is The Beast."
GRUNDIG: well lets get down there as quickly as possible
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar supports Johan statement, saying, "if a crowd has gathered someone has raised them, the mob will be innocnet people  while the leaders will maybe just frustrated townsfolk or people with evil in their hearts who are in league with those we defeated today.
SOLAR CE’NEA: I suggest we find the ringleaders and try to convince them to disperse if they are just townsfolk or if they are evil we should try and take them out silently.
SOLAR CE’NEA:   I have wand of hold person and I have grease and enlarge person which could help with crowd control
GRUNDIG: good thinking Solar i also have a few tangel foot bags aswell that we could throw out there to subdue things a bit as well
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar also wonders aloud if the Whispering Way are the orchestrators of everything that has been happening.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan nods as he considers Solar's idea, "I like the idea of that. If we can find someone or a group that are provoking the masses it could simplify things dealing with them. Grundig and myself are able to slip in without being detected given that we conceal our identify with a hooded cloak and a few strips of cloth to hide our face."
DUNGEON MASTER: The party pulls their gear together hastily and heads up the street on foot.  A low din greets the heroes, and a number of winking red torchlights can be seen.  It is not possible even for grundig to tell in the misty darkness, but judging by the voices it is possible up to a hundred souls--or perhaps even more--have thronged into the city square.

By twos and threes, groups of citizens are moving past the party towards the courthouse.
GRUNDIG: grundig moves into the shadows to better obsirve the crowed for leaders

stealth check 1d20+13=22
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar prepares and casts dancing lights for the areas of their travel which are in badly lit areas and keeps it ahead of them so if people were looking in the light they would not see the companions  but wouldhave to look behind them
DUNGEON MASTER: The party proceeds forward throgh the darkness and mist.  Visibilitiy is low--grundig can see about 70' ahead, but the human party members are suffering the usual penalties for darkness.

The party proceeds around the loop towards the back of the courthouse.  The noise of the mob in the center rises and falls.  A few voices caan be heard over the rest--"Burn it, lads!"--"If they're 'elping it, they're one and the same!"--and, perhaps most ominiously, "Make way for the ram, fellows!"
DUNGEON MASTER: The barrister Kaple is moving alongside the characters, white-faced and sweaty.  "O-oh d-d-dear!" he says.
GRUNDIG: grundig continues to move foward within the shaddows towards the court house finding a hiding place where he can better see the crowed

stealth 1d20+13=27
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan reacts quickly as the Barrister makes his comment, whispering to them man, "Best you say out of sight and remain quiet during this. If anyone of us are caught it will not end well."
DUNGEON MASTER: Grundig slips off into the misty darkness.
GRUNDIG: grundig grabs a thundrestone out of his backpack and trys to detirmon where the ram is and also where the people showting out directions to the mob

perception 1d20+13=19
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan regards the Barrister, "You have done the right thing warning us about this. However this might be the right time for you to leave. If you get caught, if any of us get caught it will be the death of us. Leave it to us, we will do what we can to stop this from getting out of hand."
DUNGEON MASTER: "Why i-i-if you think s-s-so," he stammers and then turns about and flees into the night.

Even as his form disappears, a hundred chanting voices rise in a chorus from the other side of the building.  "Bring it out!  Bring it out!  Bring it out!  Bring it out!"
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan questions Solar, "Did you want to get inside the courthouse or up onto the rooftop. Either way shouldn't be too difficult to accomplish."
SOLAR CE’NEA: On the rooftop, firstly to see the situation and hopefully the ringleaders and secondly we may need to try and convince the crowd to disperse.  however once we anounce ourselves watch out for crossbows and the like, we will be sitting ducks
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan moves into the shadow of the building as he picks his way up to the roof, using the window and roof as grip before lowering his rope to the ground for Solar to climb.
Johan Climb check: 1d20+8 = 21
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar climbs up the rope after Johand climb 1d20+1=18
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Mesodias cfollows up the rope after Solar has disappeared over the rooftop edge.
Climb check: 1d20+3 = 10
DUNGEON MASTER: Solar is two-thirds of the way up when a sound not unlike a thunderston exploding can be heard from the other side of the building.  At once the chanting stops--then, quite suddenly there is a roar,as if hundreds of people were shouting slightly different things at the same time.
DUNGEON MASTER: Solar clambers up, and then Mesodias makes his way up more slowly behind him.  Soon all three are crouching on the steeply sloping eaves of the Lepidstadt Courthouse.  Judging by the sound below, the crowd is starting to chant again: "Give it death!  Give it death!"  It also sounds like they are moving somewhat to surround the courthouse.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Once all three are on the rooftop, Johan raises the rope and moves quietly around to the front/side of the courthouse so they can get a better vantage point of what is happening.
Stealth check: 1d20+13 = 28
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar joins johan stealth 1d20+5=25
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Mesodias follows along on all fours, slowly creeping forward.
Steath check: 1d20+3 = 22
DUNGEON MASTER: The party moves foward stealthily and peers over the edge.  A chaotic sight greets them: two groups of burly armed men are attempting to break their way into the courthouse.  At the front gate stands a number of men weilding long-handled axes, whcih gleam red in the torchlight.  At the public entrance, about eight men weild a long ram, whcih they are just beginning to start swinging.

Behind them, several men can bee seen, kneeling with crossbows leveled at the doors.
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar casts grease at the ground directly infront of the door so anyone attacking the door will slip and not be able to be keep their footing
SOLAR CE’NEA: he then immediately ducks down hoping no one say him
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan indicates to Solar and Mesodias to move to the north-east section of the rooftop. Johan will secure the grapple and rope and attempt to break into one of the windows without attracting too much attention.
Climb check: 1d20+8 = 23
DUNGEON MASTER: Solar's spell sucessfully turns the ground under the ram-bearer's feet to muck, and the group of men go down in a tangle of curses and flailing limbs.  The crossbow man looks suspciously at Solar's position but apparently sees nothing--although he does seem to have his crossbow trained on that location now.

Johan and Mesodias sucessfully bash in a window on the second floor and make their way inside.

Below the covered main entrance, there are a number of ominious crashes, and someone inside shouts desparately.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan whispers, "We need to barricade the front door to give us some time. Let's move some of the chairs and desks to secure the door until Solar figures out what to do."
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar casts ghost sound at its most loud volume and directs it as far away as he can around another building.  What he has his spell say is "The beast it has escaped", He's over hear", "help us get him", "the bastards over here" and similar sayings.
SOLAR CE’NEA: As he casts the spell solar pays particualr attention to who directs the crowd, and where they are.  He is looking for the leaders of the mob.
DUNGEON MASTER: Several of the men accompanying the ram look up at the noise Solar makes around the corner.  A few of them stagger to their feet and clumsily lope off towards the direction of the sound, leaving the ram rolling in the muck.

On the ground level of the courthouse, Johan bursts into the entrance lobby bearing a number of heavy tables and chairs.  Four guardsmen have barred the heavy door from within with long pole arms, and sticks.  It is a mark of their desparation that they do not question Johan's presence, but eagerly accept his proffered furnishings as material for their makeshift barricade.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar uses his hold person wand and directs it at the man that yelled out
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "I assume that by barracading yourself inside you are not ready to hand The Beast over to the crowd, which to be honest I don't think it would stop them from ripping you apart at this stage. Your only option if you wish to go home to your families is to remove ourselves from this situation, including of course The Beast who I assure you is just as innocent as any of you. We found those responsible for the crimes he was accused of, I give you my word on this. What I am suggesting is that we collect The Beast and I will sneak us out of here and avoid unnecessary bloodshed."
Diplomacy check: 1d20+6 = 21
GRUNDIG: grundig casts dancing lights  to the north attempting to destract the group getting them to move behind the court house once they have been noticed
DUNGEON MASTER: Solar's spell fails to hold the man, who visibily shudders at the effect and then eyes the balcony.  "Witchcraft!  Eldrich beast-powers!" he cries.  "Take the door DOWN!"
DUNGEON MASTER: The men nod at Johan tersely and ready their weapons against any possible onslaught from the crowd.

Grundig's spell does indeed distract several of those who broke off from the mob at the crossbowman's direction--they head away from the gnome, although there are three pitchfork-weilding men who are peering among the rosebushes with narrowed eyes.

The axemen continue their work--it doesn't take long before the front door collapses in a shamble of boards and splinters, revealing the hastily-erected barricade behind it.  They cheer, jeer, and proceed to hack at the pile of furniture in front of them.
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar cast mage armour on himself hidden as much from view as he can.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Let's get The Beast and get out of this place without delay," Johan says as he moves downstairs.
SOLAR CE’NEA: He then proceeds to pull out his loaded crossbow and aims it at the man who appears to Solar to be in charge.

 GRUNDIG: correction 18
DUNGEON MASTER: Solar's bolt transfixes the other crossbowman between the eyes.  He slumps over, remaining on his knees as if petitioning a higher power.

The three humans meander in the semi darkness, warily probing a couple of rosebushes with their pitchforks, before apparently giving up the hunt and returning to the mass of people in the square.

Johan and Mesodias rush down the stairs, where they find a pair of guards menacing the staircase with drawn poleaxes.  "Stand fast, citizen!" they cry.  "We on't care to harm ye!"
DUNGEON MASTER: Above, at the front gate, there is a series of crashes and cries as the men continue to force their way into the courthouse.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar confident he has dealt with one of the main trouble makers moves as stealthily as he can to the window johan used to get inside.
GRUNDIG: grundig moves towards the back of the building keeping to the shadows

stealth 1d20+13=23
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Don't attack we are unarmed! We are here to help sneak you out of here without any unnessary bloodshed. The crowd is soon to break through the barricade we setup on the ground floor. If you wish to live through the night we need to move upstairs and out one of the upper story windows we have setup a rope from. The Beast is as innocent as you are in this, we have found those guilty of the crimes he has committed. We need you to unlock him and follow us now."
Diplomacy check: 1d20+6 = 25
DUNGEON MASTER: The two guardsmen look at each other and then back at Johan and Mesodias.  The silence lengthens.

"'e'll need to be well-chained," says one of the men at length.

Grundig sucessfully makes his way to the back of the building.

Solar sucessfully makes his way over the rooftop, down to the second floor.

Outside and above there are numerous cries and the crash of steel on steel.  "Blood is spilt!" cries a voice over the general din of the mob.  "We must purify them all with fire!  Burn them!  Burn the beast now!"
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar continues down stairs looking for johan and Mesodius
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "You have a deal! The sooner we are out of here the better!" Johan and Mesodias will assist the guards to speed up the process.
GRUNDIG: grundig makes his way to where he last saw the others and trys to find any evedance of where they have gone.

stealth check 1d20+13=26

survival check 1d20+13=31
DUNGEON MASTER: Solar makes his way down the stairs. As he scrambles down, there is the crash of breaking glass from back on the second floor, along with the chemical spell of alchemist's fire.  Frrom the foot of the stairs, he can also see the fight contuing at the barricade in the courthouse lobby.  It appears there are three guardsmen left up, defending themselves against seven citizens or so armed with crude implements.

Grundig sucessfully locates the rope dangling down from the roof, as well as the broken window on the second floor.

Down in the cellblocks, Johan, Mesodias, and the two guardsmen suceed in chaining the beast to the guardsmen so he cannot escape.  "'ere, you two, you'll need chains on yerselves as well.  It's got to be four guards to move this thing, and e've all got to have chains linking us and 'im."
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar casts grease in front of the gurads men and arround the the front door so again anyone coming in would have to regain their footing.  He then says Gentlemen I have done what I can.  I will now be joining my companions.  I suspect we will be coming back this way, when we do I suggest we all get away from this death trap.
GRUNDIG: grundig climbs the rope and goes through the window

climb check 1d20+4=11
GRUNDIG: grundig makes his way down the stairs to the ground floor and checks on the front door.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Once we get outside the building you can chain him up to us. But for now you will need us to stay in front and clear the path outside."
Intimidate check: 1d20+0 = 14
DUNGEON MASTER: The men look steadily back at Johan.  "Not a chance, citizen.  We take this thing out with four o' us chained to it, or we don't take it out."  At that moment Solar comes down the stairs with the others.

Up above, Grundig comes down the steps just in time to see the foyer engulfed in flames, presumably from a dropped torch on top of an extremely flammable substance.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Fine let's just get out of here!"
GRUNDIG: grundig yells to the guards "aint none getting throug there now fall back to the other room
 GRUNDIG: "
SOLAR CE’NEA: "It is getting very dangerous up there...they are keen to burn down the building so gentlemen" SOlar says to the guards.  "If you  want to live you will go out with out the chains becasue there is no way for you to get out of any exit chained as 5 people.  There are crosbowmen aimed at every door way and the building is surrounded by mobs outside every window.  the only way out is to ruch them and you are not going to be able to do that teathered to the beast or to each other.  I guess you really want to die Intimidate 1d20+0=15
DUNGEON MASTER: The men are not impressed by Solar's arugments.  "It's our neck, and likely yours too, if this thing goes out without regard for protocol," he says.  Now, two o' you friends of this beast going to be chained to it, or it ain't going no-where."

The fire continues to burn in the lobby.  Two of the guards hustle off to get buckets of water, sensing that perhaps the mobs' tactics have changed.
SOLAR CE’NEA: What is the protocol for an angry mob pray tell?
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan and Mesodias lock a manicle to each of their wrists and head up the stairs to the ground level.
DUNGEON MASTER: "Stand fast and wait for reinforcements," repleis the man with a cold look.  "In case of evacuation, guardsmen o the fine town o' Lepidstadt are to heed regulations regarding detainees and documentations an' such."

With that, they shackle Mesodias and Johan to the beast with 10' long chains between them.
GRUNDIG: grundig makes his way out of the foyer into the next room
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Trust me there is no reinforcement coming to aid us. I have no reason to deceive you. We gain no advantage by staying here except forfeiting our lives. If we leave now together, I know a safe place we can secure the beast tonight."
DUNGEON MASTER: "An that's why we're goining now ain't it?  Sonny o'er there asked all nice like what the protocol for an angry mob was, and I thought it'd be kind o'me to tell him."

With the five properly shackled togethere, the guard pockets the keys and bids Johan lead the way up the stairs.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan leads them as quickly as possible upstairs and to the north east corner of the building.
GRUNDIG: grundig spots the others making there way up the stairs and follows them up leaving the guards to fight the fire
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan leads the group upstairs to the first floor of the building to the northern side of the courthouse. As they reach the northern section Johan smashes and clears the glass window with one of the chairs before jumping through to the ground below, regardless of the damage they will take. Once cleared they will attempt to rush past any of the mob on this side of the building into the safety of the mist and night.
DUNGEON MASTER: The ploy suceeds--there are but few of the mob that have decided to linger behind the courthouse, and they are easily bowled over during the group's dash for freedom.

The party proceeds into the mist, the flames of the courhouse rapidly fading away behind them.  Several minutes later they arrive, breathless, at the temple of Pharasma, where black-robed priests take the group in while the city watch sorts out the events of the night.
DUNGEON MASTER: In the event it takes several hours, and it is nearly 4:30 am when the party is unshackled from the beast, and permitted to return to their houses for the remainder of the night.
 DUNGEON MASTER: [2000 xp total.]
