Session 41
[GAME STARTS HERE]
DUNGEON MASTER: Court is adjourned for the
day. It is about two in the afternoon,
and the dense fog is just now breaking up to reveal a blue autumn sky high
overhead. Sullen townsfolk stand on
every street corner near the courthouse, glaring at the heroes.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan walks out of
the court room with a smug look on his face, his new suit obviously having the
desired effect on the courtroom officials.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar turns to his companions
and says, well that makes all the troubles of the last few days worth it. However it is no good resting on our laurals
we should continue investigating the next charge.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Did you see
the look on the prosecutors face? Makes the past few days inviestigations so
worth while," chuckles Johan. "Johan regards Solar, "Yes we or
rather our client is not out of the woods yet, as they would say."
SOLAR CE’NEA: perhaps we should check out
Radniche from the Sugeon's Flats, who bought the surgeons tools first and then
continue on from there?
GRUNDIG:
hehe we might actualy get him off.
agreed but do you want to look into the sergon tools first or do you
think it would be better to leave it till after the court cace.
SOLAR CE’NEA: I am concerned that that lead
will be getting cold
SOLAR CE’NEA: I thikn first my small friend
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "I don't mind
what we do as long as we have enough time to check each avenue out this
evening. What do you both suggest?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: I think perhaps the sugeon flats
first becasue we will need daylight hours for businesses and the fire we can
check straight after that. If it starts
to take longer than 30 mins we can drop it and head out to the fire location
GRUNDIG: im happy to spend say an hour
checking the lead for the tools but i would not spend more time than that and i
wouldent mind selling this cross bow aswell

DUNGEON MASTER: The party makes their way to
Radniche's Chigury Supplies, in the surgeon's flats. After inquiring with a few passerbys, the
shop is located. It sits in a smaller
alleyway, flanked on either side by larger shops that reek of chemistry. The sloppily painted store sign is streaked
with dirt and growths of lichen.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: As the party nears
the shopfront Johan stops them for a moment, "If this is the guy involved
in you know what, we should proceed with caution. Do you think it wise to check
around the back without raising any suspision if there is an exit out the back?
Just in case."
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar looks around the street to
see if he can see any "meat shields" or other unsavory characters
that might try to interviene if the interview within the store goes bad

DUNGEON MASTER: Solar and Grundig spot nothing
out of sorts.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar aggrees with Johan and
than says how do you want to do this when we get in?...intimidate straight away
or sugar coat it to see how we can get?
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Hit him hard
and keep the pressure on. I honestly don't think we can coax this information
out with honeyed words but I could be wrong?"
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan turns to
Mesodias, "I don't mean actually hitting him. Just what Solar suggested,
intimidate."
GRUNDIG: grundig sneaks his way arround the
back of store checking for a back entrance and hides in view of the door
stealth 1d20+13=33
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar says...Sweet desna, where
did grundig go, I was just looking at him???
DUNGEON MASTER: Grundig slips back into the
narrow gap between the two buildings and observes the other exit from this
small shop.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "He might be
keeping an eye out the back just in case our friend isn't talkative."
SOLAR CE’NEA: Ok, Shall we enter. with his
companions nods Solar starts to walk into the shop
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan and Mesodias
walk into the shop prepared to get this over and done with.
GRUNDIG: grundig looks arround the alyway for
any plants that he might be able to cast entangle on
DUNGEON MASTER: The interior of Radniche’s is
cramped and piled with skeletons, pickled things in jars, and alchemical
components. A thin man in green glasses and an outlandish black top hat greets
the heroes. "Customers! Welcome!
How can I assist you?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar greets the Man and asks,
May I be speaking to the great Radniche
GRUNDIG: [my connection is bad hardly catching
anything if its inprotant can you pm me]
DUNGEON MASTER: "Yes! Yes!" The man hesitates somewhat. "How did you hear of me, if I may be so
bold?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: "Through the court
system. We are investigating a series of
Murders and at one of the crime scenes this set of tools was left behind. We have been correctly informed that you had
them and sold them to someone".
Solar shows him the surgeons tools.
DUNGEON MASTER: "Ahh... yes..." he
hesitates and clears his throat.
"I'm afraid you may have reached a dead end, good sirs, as I cannot
possibly give my clients information away."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan will stand to
the side sensing motive on every word Radniche says.
DUNGEON MASTER: (A few workers and chirugeons
pass by in the alleyway outside, but otherwise Grundig sees no movement of
interest. He remains undetected behind a
rainwater barrel beside the small door that functions as the only other obvious
exit from this building.)
SOLAR CE’NEA: Thats a shame, very well, our
large friend over here will be gladly staying with you (pointing to mesodius)
while we bring in the town watch, as you were the last person to have the
tools, that makes you the prime suspect, so an arrest will mean prison for you
until your trial, funny thing is I know they are short of room at the moment,
shame that I guess we could alsways request you stay in the cell with the
beast....you might be more co-operative after that 1d20+0=20
DUNGEON MASTER: "Prison!" the man's
voice breaks into a high-pitched squeal.
"Oh my! No, sir, that simply
won't do!" He hesitates and looks
Mesodias up and down, breathing heavily.
"There!" he says, regaining his composure. "Let me check my records.."
The man moves back
behind the counter, keeping his eyes on Mesodias all the while.
DUNGEON MASTER: After a few moments, Radniche
drags out a heavy log book. "Ah,
yes, I remember the fellow," he says looking at the heroes over the
green-tinted glasses. "One Mr.
Vorkstag. Dapper Fellow. Of Vorkstag & Grine's Chymic Works. Good day sirs, and may you catch your
murderer!"
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar tries to remember if he
has heard of this name or the company before Know Local 1d20+15=25
DUNGEON MASTER: [It is now about 2:30 in the
afternoon.]
DUNGEON MASTER: The party is already aware
that tomorrow's witness is a man named Karl Helig, who was blinded in the
accident.
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar suggests we quickly ask
around for Karls residence. Diplomacy
1d10+0=11
DUNGEON MASTER: After spinning his wheels for
a bit, Solar discovers that Karl lives in a small cottage by the Lesser Moutray
River near Lepidstadt.
DUNGEON MASTER: It is now 3pm.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar asks his compainions, what
should we do first? should we go to the place of the fire first or the witness?
GRUNDIG: i think it would be best to go speek
to the witness first he may give us a clue as to what to look for
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "I agree just
in case he plans on retiring early for the night before the court case
tomorrow."
SOLAR CE’NEA: A sound plan my friends lets
head out
DUNGEON MASTER: The party makes their way to
the small riverside cottage. Considering
the man's reputed state, the grounds are in good repair, and a knock to the
door brings a series of tapping and thumps before the door swings open to
reveal a blotchy-faced man with a pair of eyepatches and a wide smile.
"Hullo?"
he inquires.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Good afternoon Mr Helig, we are
representatives of the court and wanted to talk to you about your testimony
tommorrow
GRUNDIG: greetings friend we are here from the
courght inquiring about the fire in karbisle i was wondering if you might be
able to tell us what you know about it.
DUNGEON MASTER: "Well! Not a chance I'd refuse the chance to tell
about those times! Come in; come in! I have a bottle of Caliphas red I was just
thinking of opening up. Do come
in!"
SOLAR CE’NEA: Thank you dear sir
GRUNDIG: grundig introduces himself and his
compano=ions one at a time
GRUNDIG: as he makes his way inside
DUNGEON MASTER: "Good to meet all of
you. Come sit down!" he says,
ushering the party to a sturdy. clean room set with a table and some homely
furniture. The man heads into the
kitchen for a few mintues, returning with several wine glasses, the promised
bottle, and a loaf of freshly baked bread.
DUNGEON MASTER: "Eat some! I insist!
And now tell me--what is this business that brings you here?"
GRUNDIG: we are here to see if tjhere is
anything that may requier more investergation in regards to the fire that took
the life of dr brada can you tell us what you remimber about it and what you
saw.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan sense's Motive
before drinking and eating what is offerred. Sense Motive check: 1d20+6 = 18
(22 vs. humans)
GRUNDIG: grundig takes a peace of bread but
ddeclines the drink as he dose not drink
DUNGEON MASTER: Johan notices that man is very
friendly and seems to pride himself on his independence and normalacy.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar politely declines the food
and drink explaining he had eaten just recently, but thanks the man for his
generosity.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan offers to join
in and enjoy a few drinks with the man. "I would like to have a drink with
you. Cheers."
DUNGEON MASTER: Karl pours out five glasses of
wine and sips on his as he considers Grundig's question. "It was the beast--he was a giant of a
monster made out of fur, scales and hideous flesh. He came in at night, attacked the good Dr.
Brada, and threw him against the walls.
I had hid--Dr Brada told me to--but when the thing was gone, I tried to
come inside and drag him and the patients out of the fire. I was too late, though--and before I could
get anyone out, something fell and knocked me on the head."
He grows quiet, and
his voice takes a bitter tone that it did not have before. "The last thing I saw was that... thing
ambling off into the darkness."
SOLAR CE’NEA: Can you tell us more of what Dr
Brada did? was he good with his patients
DUNGEON MASTER: "He was a noble man. He hired me at the Sanctuary to help him cure
patients who were cursed with madness and deformity. He performed some ... experiments which would
be frowned upon by the townsfolk, which is why he built the Sanctuary outside
of town. But he was a noble man,"
Karl repeats with a confident nod.
GRUNDIG: did the beast say anything at all or
did it just attack the docter.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Experiments? what sort of
experiments? We are not trying to sully
the Dr's good name here, we just need the full picture
DUNGEON MASTER: "It growled and roared,
sir, but did not speak. Would you care
for some more wine?"
DUNGEON MASTER: "He disected corpses to
find what lay at the root of these ailments."
SOLAR CE’NEA: may I ask, what did he do ith
the body after he had finished the disection?
GRUNDIG: grundig picks up the glass and
reluctnly takes a sip "thankyou but no im not realy a drinker"
DUNGEON MASTER: "Why... we buried them
all, I believe."
DUNGEON MASTER: "Ah." The man's face drops a bit. "Would you care for some water
then?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: Where abouts did you bury them?
SOLAR CE’NEA: Sense motive for any falsehoods

DUNGEON MASTER: "In the cemetary beside
the Sanctuary. Now, if I may ask a
question of my own, sirs--has any of you had a family member that suffered from
madness or deformity?"
GRUNDIG: no thankyou im fine for the moment.
DUNGEON MASTER: The mans face drops even
further and he turns his full attention to Solar.
GRUNDIG: where there any peculiare happenings
or people arround in the days leading up to the fire
SOLAR CE’NEA: No but my family works for a
University where we sometimes assist those with such conditions
GRUNDIG: well im a gnome so some might call
that a deformity in it self grundig chuckels hartidly.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Well I don't
think any of my family has madness however I did track some rather troubled
individuals when I was working as a city ranger. Difficult to work with if I
don't say so myself. Why do you ask?"
DUNGEON MASTER: "Ah. Well, Dr. Brada had. One of his sisters was a horrid hunchback
with an evil looking left eye. The poor
soul was burned to death as a witch and a demon spawn, and Dr. Brada always
blamed himself. He devoted himself to
curing these deformities. He was a good
man," he repeats, nodding.
GRUNDIG: grundig askes his qquestion again
SOLAR CE’NEA: We are looking for why Dr Brada
might have been attacked, as my companion asked before, was there any
suspescious or purculiar happenings going on leading up to the fire?
GRUNDIG: deplomicy check 1d20+1=13
DUNGEON MASTER: Karl once again overlooks
Grundig's question in the course of the conversation, but does seem to catch
Solar's question and addresses his answer to him.
"Not at
all! Everything was as usual, until that
monster showed up and killed all the patients and my master. I only regret that I didn't have another eye
to lose trying to save him!"
GRUNDIG: i apreciate your time karl for your
time and for your patints awnsering our questions. but we must be going.
DUNGEON MASTER: "So soon! Well, it was a true pleasure, sirs! A true pleasure! Best of luck to all of you on your
inquiries!"
DUNGEON MASTER: It is about 3:30 in the
afternoon.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "THank you for
your time and the drinks. Good day to you," replies Johan.
GRUNDIG: after a short ride out of town
grundig gets out of his new fancy cloths and into his traveling cloths and
lether amour
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan and Mesodias
find a place with some light shrubs to quickly change into something more
comfortable without disturbing the locals.
DUNGEON MASTER: The party heads north out of
town and stops alongside the road to change their clothes. It is a half hour trip to the ruins of the
Sanctuary, making it about 4:15 in the afternoon when the party arrives. Sanctuary lies some 3 miles north of
Lepidstadt along the Lesser Moutray river. A narrow track follows the western
shore of the river, passing through depressingly gray marshland before arriving
at the lonely ruins of
Sanctuary on Karb
Isle--which, in actuality, is more of an ithsmus than an actual island.
Ahead, the sad
remains of a broken building lie on a spur of land jutting into the river. The
burnt timbers of a large house sag into the undergrowth of nettles and
thistles. Nature is taking back this charred ruin, as if trying to erase dark
memories. Nearby, a
small cluster of
gravestones jut from the weeds.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Gentlemen I think it is time to
keep aware of our surroundings. Percpetion 1d20+5=15
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan kneels down
before they head further to investigate the burning out remains of the area to
determine if any fresh footprints can be seen.

DUNGEON MASTER: Johan discovers a few
footprints--humanoid by the looks of them, with long, claw-like nails. They look to be several days old.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan raises the
alarm with his companions pointing the the claw prints as he draws his longbow
out and readies it.

JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Hopefully
whatever made these tracks is something hairy and scaley that matches poor
Karl's description," states Johan.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar looks at the footprints to
determine if it is some kind of undead that he is familair with, with all the
fire and death here he is assuming they will be having to face off against more
undead. Know religion 1d20+10=19
DUNGEON MASTER: Neither Grundig nor Solar is
able to identify the source of these tracks.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Come one you
guys don't know what caused this? Ok well let's check out the burnt out
building before we even think about disturbing those graves."
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar lets everyone know that he
is going to cast mage armour on himself with the wand, does anyone else what a
casting as well?
GRUNDIG: grundig keeps an eye out for traps
and pitfalls perception 1d20+13=19
DUNGEON MASTER: The party encoutners no traps
as the proceed forward into the nettles and broken timbers. The ground is clogged with dense rubble and
fallen debris.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Shall we pick
our way carefully through the rubble and look for the source of the fire, what
caused it?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: Yes and perhaps the remains of
the dr
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: "Can you guys
find any connection between these three cases with the beast? Do you think they
could be related in some way I can't see?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar assist with the searching
but is not very effective in all the rubble 1d20+5=14
GRUNDIG: grundig starts kiking the loose ruble
to see if he can find anyting of interest he also casts detect magic to see if
he can pick up on anything as he looks arround perception 1d20+13=31
DUNGEON MASTER: Solar discovers a few more
nettles.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan slowly works
his way forward, inspecting the rubble for anything untowards.

JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Mesodias Perception

SOLAR CE’NEA: I don't know any connections but
the fact bodies are being discected here and parts of bodies were being
trafficed in Morass seems like some sort of shady dealings that miht be
connected. Not sure how hergstag fits in
with that though.
DUNGEON MASTER: Johan discovers even more
nettles.
On the other hand,
Grundig turns up a charred metal strongbox, warped by the heat of the fire. The
lock appears to be fused.
Furthermore,
Mesodias--who has wandered somewhat to the south--appears to have discovered
something, as he is Ooooooning with all his might.
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar heads over to where
Mesodius is to investigate what has excited his silent friend.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan moves down to
join Mesodias to find out what all the noise is about.
GRUNDIG: grundig speaks up as well "ive
found a locked box but i think it can
wait till we see what masodias has found
DUNGEON MASTER: Solar discovers Mesodias
standing over a 3' wide hole.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan looks to
Grundig, "Your the only one who would fit the whole."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: *hole
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar signals the other guys
(trying to be quite) and points out the hole
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar ask quitley should I send
in the dancing lights
GRUNDIG: can someone cast light on a pebble
and throw it down there
SOLAR CE’NEA: If so we should be ready for
something to come out
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan straps his
longbow on his shoulder before drawing his longsword, "Sure let's see
what's down there?"
Mesodias also draws
his heavy mace just in case something is using the hole as a home.
GRUNDIG: maby we should check out the box
before we go down whilst its still light
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar cast dancing lights and
them bravely moves behind the melee fighters before sed=ning it down the whole
to give everyone a better view
DUNGEON MASTER: The lights reveal a pair of
barrels about fifteen feet below the heroes' feet.
DUNGEON MASTER: There is a brief scuffling
sound below that quickly stops.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan points to
Solar to move away slowly from the hole.
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar is happy to comply
SOLAR CE’NEA: He is ready to cast protection
from evil on the person closest to the hole
SOLAR CE’NEA: and has his crossbow out
DUNGEON MASTER: Splatterface's neck hair
bristles and he lets out a low growl.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Mesodias casts

GRUNDIG: grundig moves up beside Johan and
casts bark skin on him http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/spells/barkskin.html#_barkskin
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan moves into a
flancing position with Mesodias in regards to the hole as they wait for
something hungry to emerge.
DUNGEON MASTER: The seconds tick by.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Johan calls down
into the hole, "Come on up and have some fun." He kicks a few loose
stones into the hole to attempt to lure whatever is lurking beneath the
surface.
DUNGEON MASTER: The seconds continue to tick
by. [It has now been 45 seconds since
mesodias' spell.]
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: Mesodias casts Light
on the end of the Rope of Climbing and commands the rope to go down the hole.
DUNGEON MASTER: The rope coils down into the
hole, with the light shining at the far end.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: While Mesodias
remembers, he casts Mending on the damaged metal box Grundig is holding.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA/MESODIAS: retract Mending

GRUNDIG: "what about tying the rope to me
and lowering me down the hole thatway if anyting bad happend you can pull me

blast of fire shoots up out of the hole and the screams of the creatures are
mingled with the smell of charred flesh.

GRUNDIG: grundig looks down the hole to see if
