Carrion Crown Session 21

Session 21
The party currently stands in the oubilette.  Several iron doors line the walls of this large, empty room. In
the middle of the room, a hinged ten-foot-square metal grating lies over a dark pit in the floor. A thick rope has been tied to the grating and dangles into the pit below.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "I don't know what evil lies at the depth of that pit but I won't be able to stop wondering what is down there if we leave now without checking what is in it."
SOLAR CE’NEA: I agree, my friend. I think we should go down perhaps we tie our own rope and go down?
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "Do you have any rope we could use to do that? It seems I used the only rope I had to get access to this level of the prision."
SOLAR CE’NEA: Yes I have a silk rope of 5 feet
SOLAR CE’NEA: we can use that
SOLAR CE’NEA: redact 5 feet for 50 feat
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar recasts dancing lights and sends them down the hole to see if they can see anything
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: Johan secures the silk from rope Solar to one of the metal bars that line the room. He positions himself so he can see over the edge of the pit with the assistance of Solar's dancing lights. Perception check: 1d20+10 = 22
DUNGEON MASTER: At the bottom of the pit lies a skeleton, as well as a number of what appear to be gold coins.  Various other equipment and a mace can be seen as well.
DUNGEON MASTER: The pit is 30' deep.
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar also cast detect magic  to see if he can see any magic items at the bottom of the pit
DUNGEON MASTER: Two sources of magic glimmer at the bottom of the pit: the mace, and a small stone cube off to one side.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "That's enough to satisfy going down there. You two stand guard while I climb down to grab everything."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: Johan tests the rope with his weight before slowly lowering himself down the pit. Take 10 Climb check: 10+8 = 18
SOLAR CE’NEA: OK but make sure you check for secret fdoors down there as well
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: Johan Perception check: 1d20+10 = 27
DUNGEON MASTER: Johan easily climbs to the bottom of the pit.  At the bottom lies a skeleton with broken femur bones.  There is also an extra skull with a partially severed neckbone.

The objects on the floor of this pit include 120gp, a broken masterwork heavy crossbow, a masterwork
longsword, a masterwork heavy mace, a square stone cube, and a ring of slightly rusted keys.
DUNGEON MASTER: The smell of decay and condensation lies heavy on the oubliette’s walls.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "Looks like we have found a good stash. Gimme a while to collect this stuff."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: Johan collects all of the items of value including the extra skull before climbing back out of the pit to show his finding to the rest of the party.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "You'd have to piss the guards off real well to find your way down there."
SOLAR CE’NEA: well this guy was one of the worst criminals at the time!
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "In a way I'm glad to hear that because he is finally at rest. I don't know why this extra skull was down there but this poor sod probably got eaten by the Lopper if he was stuck in the pit for any period of time."
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar uses identify to identify what the magic items are
DUNGEON MASTER: The mace is a +1 heavy mace, and the cube is a stone of alarm.
SOLAR CE’NEA: The party breaks up the gold so they all get 40 gp each, they leave behind the broken crossbow, but share out the rest of the loot
SOlar takes a masterwork longsword , a stone of alarm and the ring of slightly rusted keys. Johan a masterwork heavy mace
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar suggests heading back the way they came to see if they can use the keys to open the hidden lock they found after defeating the mosswater maurder
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "You know we could get lucky with these keys if they open that passage way." Johan collects his gear and heads in the direction of the secret door.
DUNGEON MASTER: The party heads back down through the skeleton room with the collapsed staircase, and into the western hallway and from there back into the room where they recently defeated the Mosswater Marauder.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar recast dancing lights and says he will try to open the lock and for the other guys to be ready for anything
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "Go for it. We have your back."
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar tentatively uses the keys to try and open the lock
DUNGEON MASTER: The key fits the lock, which opens with a satisfying 'click'.  The door swings open to reveal a small alcove that contains several armor stands, weapon racks, and a wooden chest, all of which still hold dust-caked suits of armor and weapons.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "What have we got here?" Johan looks thought the items found for anything of masterwork quality.
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar casts detect magic on the items around the room
DUNGEON MASTER: In all, there are six suits of masterwork chainmail and six suits of masterwork studded leather armor, four masterwork longswords, four masterwork heavy maces, two masterwork heavy crossbows, 120 crossbow bolts, a case of 10 +1 crossbow bolts, a wand of hold person (11 charges), 4 potions of cure moderate wounds, and a rope of climbing.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: Johan Perception check: 1d20+10 = 23
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar Perception 1d20+3=16
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: Johan and Mesodias arm themselves with a heavy crossbow including 20 bolts each.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: Mesodias equips on the the masterwork heavy maces for times they face skeletons and other undead.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar takes 80 bolts and the 10 +1 bolts the wand of hold person (11 charges)  and one of the cure moderate wounds.
SOLAR CE’NEA: on refeltion solar takes 2 cure moderate wounds
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: Mesodias takes the Rope of Climbing and places it into his backpack.
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar suggests looking behind the protcullus buy using the lever
DUNGEON MASTER: The party sees what appears to be a large cellblock.  Many of the barred cells lie open.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: Johan looks through the portcullis and queries the party. "What do you think. Did you want to check this part of the prision out before we head back?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: I think that might be a good idea, we seem to have a section in the south that has the spaltterman and I wouldl ike to be well rested for that.  perhaps we can clear this area and leave the splater man until last
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "Ok let's see if we can budge this winch to open the porrtcullis enough to get under."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: Johan and Mesodias stand either side and try to open the portcullis with brute strength.
DUNGEON MASTER: Johan winds the winch.  The chain rattles and scrapes.  From without comes the grating sound of metal against stone.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Perhaps we go norht first and see whats up there?
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "Sure why not. However if we encounter anything we can't handle maybe we can retreat and drop the portcullis?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOunds good to me!
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar recasts dancing lights
DUNGEON MASTER: A brass nameplate, its face caked with soot, hangs above a portcullis leading into a large cellblock. Many of the iron doors along the walls within the cellblock hang open, revealing empty cells within.
DUNGEON MASTER: The brass nameplate reads: "Reaper's Hold".
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "That sounds like a rather pleasent place. We have a ton of rooms in here I hope they are empty."
SOLAR CE’NEA: Just watch out for skeletons
SOLAR CE’NEA: shall we walk around?
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar directs his lights in a usual formation
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: Johan follows Solar's suggestion before to avoid heading south. "Let's move out." Johan moves into the hallway before looking around for any sign or sound of movement.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: Perception check: 1d20+10 = 22
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar percpetion check 1d20+3=20
DUNGEON MASTER: The party makes their way slowly around the prison block.  The bars are rusted and most cells lie open.  The shadows dance and wiggle as Solar's dancing lights move forward.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "I think we should loop around and close the portcullis before heading back to town. I'm just not keen on opening that door without having time to recover first."
SOLAR CE’NEA: I agree!
SOLAR CE’NEA:  lets go pick up the rest of the loot in the guard house and head home
DUNGEON MASTER: The party loops back around the prison block, discovering nothing of note.
SOLAR CE’NEA: If we can I wolud like to buy a wand of something that can be used to damage undead
SOLAR CE’NEA: The group heads back to the armory and picks up the rest of the loot and heads home the way they came
DUNGEON MASTER: Outside the downpour is continuing.
SOLAR CE’NEA: The group head back through the treams to aviod to mny prying eyes from seeing them.
DUNGEON MASTER: The party makes their way back through the "treams", dripping and bowed under the wind.  Their boots slosh in the mud.  After about a half hour they arrive at Kendra's.  There is the sound of bustling in the kitchen, and the noise of various pots and pans clanging together can be occasionally heard.

"Back so soon?" she calls.
SOLAR CE’NEA: You are a wonderous sight to see my dear, we have seen enough death, undead and apparitions for today!
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "I just remembered we bought this damned book back with us. Where do you think we should put it so it doesn't affect us?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: Is there a secure shed on the property we could use?
DUNGEON MASTER: Kendra pokes her head out of the kitchen.  "Shed?  Not exactly," she says, wiping her hands on her apron.  "Daddy wasn't really much of a farmer.... what do you need?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOmewhere safe, secure and dry but away from us to put this cursed book so it doesn't affect us
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "I'm sorry I bought it here. I should have left it in the prision but with everything that happened I lost track of things."
DUNGEON MASTER: "What book is that?  You might just leave it in the old study," she says, indicating Professor Lorrimor's old study.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "I'll find a place to put it so it doesn't attract attention." Johan will find some place to conceal the book within the study.
SOLAR CE’NEA: this is the splattermans book the blue lady told us we can use it against the splatterman but not to use it too soon as it will effect us in a negative way.
DUNGEON MASTER: "Well," she says, digesting Solar's statement, "you could use the cellar.  It was still dry when I checked it this morning... except for the floor, of course."
SOLAR CE’NEA: Perhaps we can put it there this afternoon.
SOLAR CE’NEA: WHile Johan is putting the book away, Solar ask J=Kendra if there is somewhere in town where he could buy wands
DUNGEON MASTER: "There is the Unfurling Scroll--I know he stocks a few things.  Or you could try the Silk Purse--those moneylenders take all kinds of things as collateral."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "That does sound promising," says Johan with a slight nod of his head.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Perhaps we should visit these places today and see if they have any weapons or wands we can use against undead, I suspect the spltterman will be a lot harder to deal with then what we have come up against so far
SOLAR CE’NEA: As well as the temple, the priest might be more helpful if we tell him wat is going on
DUNGEON MASTER: The merry group sits down to a lunch of fried chicken and salad, before turning to the afternoon's acticities.
SOLAR CE’NEA: We can go sell our extra gear and then try and find some wands/weapons
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "Yeah some of this stuff we don't really need. See if they can make use of of them."
SOLAR CE’NEA: sounds good to me!
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "Where do you supposed we came across these items if anyone asks? I'm mean it's common knowledge by know what we are up to."
SOLAR CE’NEA: Kendra could also be selling off some of the Professors things...unless they saw us carrying them?
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar suggests going to the general store to revist the family they met before.
DUNGEON MASTER: The Ravengro General Store does not generally trade in weapons or armor.  "You might try old Jorfa's Forge, across yonder," the storekeeper suggests.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Thamks Mr  Avanaki, I hope you wife and children are well!
SOLAR CE’NEA: the group heads over to the forge
DUNGEON MASTER: The Ravengro Forge is run by a fat middle-aged dwarf woman named Jorfa.  She looks up at the heroes as they enter.
DUNGEON MASTER: [Jorfa will pay half price for all weapons and armor.]\
SOLAR CE’NEA:  six suits of masterwork chainmail andsix suits of masterwork studded leather armor, four masterwork longswords, four masterwork heavy maces, two masterwork heavy crossbows,  a pouch containing a dozen masterwork shurikens, a masterwork silver war razor,
DUNGEON MASTER: Each party member recieves 1,040 gp and 5 sp.  Jorfa buys the goods, asking no questions as she does so.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "Jorfa, could you show me your suits of armour that are available?"
DUNGEON MASTER: Jorfa has a small collection of magical arms and armor for sale, including a +1 breastplate, a +1 half-plate, a +1 greatsword, a +1 light steel shield and a +1 rapier.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "The breastplate, greatsword and light shield, how much are they?"
DUNGEON MASTER: [These items are priced per the CRB.]
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "I'm close but not quiet close enough to purchasing one of your fine blades and armour. Is there any service we could do of value to you to make up for the difference?
DUNGEON MASTER: The old dwarf looks Johan up and down.  "How much difference are ya talking?"
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "Just under eight hundred gold coins. I know i'm just wasting your time. Definately come back when I've got some more."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "The thing is, these undead that threaten the village are immune from my normal blade. Just passes straight through em like nothin happened."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "I;d just love to be able to crush em into the ground with a blade tempered with magic. That would make my day."
DUNGEON MASTER: "One second, lad.  I know where abouts you found this stuff.  Ole Jorfa ain't that blind yet.  You know I was living in this town when that old prison was still bein' used? ... Anyway, there was a dwarf feller they had up in that prison when it burnt down.  Now I happen to know for a fact that there was a certain hammer in his posession, an' I happen to know it was taken to that prison.  For a fact.  You bring me that hammer and... I'll say that makes up the difference."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: "You see we were not going to sell the hammer because we know of its true value and worth. If we could be seen to pass this particular item what else would you be prepared to through into the deal to make it even?"
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: Diplomach check: 1d20+3 = 14
DUNGEON MASTER: "I think if you know its worth then ye'll be glad to sell it for what I'm a-offering," she replies with a shrewd gleam to her eye.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Perhaps my dear lady you could throw in so me alchemist fire or something of that nature
DUNGEON MASTER: "Ye be wanting to speak to Jominda," replies Jorfa with a wave of her hand.  "I don't keep anything of the sort about my place."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: Johan smiles in reply, "Nah thanks. We weill return when we have enough coin. Before we leve were there any other items you may have interest in acquiring?"
DUNGEON MASTER: "Nothing today, lad," replies the old dwarf.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA: Johan nods, "We must be going on our way. Thank ye for your time."
