Session 16
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar
sits with Kendra until she is asleep, once she is comfortably resting Solar
leaves her room and positions himself back downstairs with his gear (morning
star out) in guard position.
DUNGEON MASTER:
Kendra does not fall asleep quickly--her eyelids flutter closed and her
breathing gradually evens out after about an hour.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
Johan finishes the deed of burying the tainted corpses of the villagers that
had disturbed the night. He walks back inside exhausted, placing the shovel
against the wall not concerned with leaving a muddied trail in the hallway.
DUNGEON MASTER: [The
party earned 200 xp each for the previous encounter.]
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
Johan rests against the wall for a moment as he catches his breath. He regards
Mesodias, "Well that was unexpected and quite a shock for all of us,
especially poor Kendra. I'm going to give this book to Solar who might make
sense of its contents before crashing for the night."
DUNGEON MASTER:
"UnnnnHnnnn," agrees Mesodias.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar
thanks him for the book, SOlar wishes them a good night "sleep well my
friends you have earned a peaceful ret of the night". Solar then settles down in the "guard
chair" and starts to look at the book which appears to be the professors
journal.
DUNGEON MASTER: The
thin book that fell out of the professor's coat is about the size of a
hankerchief folded in half. It is bound
with thin black leather. There appear to
be several stains of blood and gore on the pages.
DUNGEON MASTER: The
journal appears to have been started very recently. Entries are recorded in squat-looking
scribbles that lurch from page to page.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
Johan leaves as quietly as he came before retreating to the bedroom before
equipping his chain shirt. Once he had secured his light armour he cleans up as
best he can before lying down trying to clear his mind of the nights events to
hopefully fall alseep.
DUNGEON MASTER:
Below are the entries from Professor Lorrimor’s journal.
6th of August, 4711
I woke up today to
find two dead whippoorwills on my windowsill. The hag's foretelling has finally
come true.
I know growing up in
Ravengro hasn’t been the easiest on Kendra. Although she didn’t remember very
much about living in Lepidstadt, as a child she would often tell me of dreams
of a big city. I tried to tell her all children have these types of dreams, but
I don’t know if she ever truly accepted it.
10th of August, 4711
I leave today for
Lepidstadt. I’ve had... [here blood has soaked in, rendering the text
illegible] ...told my other colleagues
about my plans. They’ll find out soon enough.
29th of August, 4711
I cannot believe the
difficulties I had getting into Tamrivena today. The guards at the gate were
being completely unreasonable, demanding to know what my business was and why I
was travelling on the road.
I had to pull quite
a few strings simply to get through the damn gate! I was half tempted to simply
spend the night in Nathrus, but it didn’t come to that. This time. I don’t know
what’s happened to this town, but I simply don’t have time to be dealing with
petty thugs such as these. I’ve got far too many things to do once I get home.
3rd of September,
4711
It was good to see
Kendra when I got home. I forgot to get her a gift like I usually do. She
seemed to shrug it off saying she was probably too old to get a treat whenever
her father went away.
The disappointment
in her voice still stung though.
5th of September,
4711
I’m concerned that some unusual people have been
snooping around Ravengro while I was away. Perhaps I’m just getting paranoid,
but some of the comments people have made are somewhat unsettling.
14th of September,
4711
I’m not growing paranoid, there have been
strangers lurking around in the woods. I have my suspicions as to who it might
be, but I have no idea what they could possibly want.
25th of September,
4711
Of course. I’m such
a fool for not seeing it before. There is only one possible reason they could
have for being here. But why now? Why after all this time? This requires
further investigation, but I don’t have too much time left.
29th of September,
4711
It seems the rumours
aren’t all just old ghost stories after all. That helps explain their interest
in the place. But it doesn’t explain why now. Regardless I believe quite
strongly that they’re after something [this word is blotted out with black ink]
someone that was there. Father Dimitru should be able to help me with that.
1st of October, 4711
I see just how ill
prepared I was when I first headed out there. I am lucky to have returned at
all. But of course I know luck didn’t have anything to do with it. I’ll get
some benefit from that damn curse before I go.
I remember reading
clues and hints about a crypt in the Restlands. I’ll need to go searching
through my notes. I should never have let my supplies get so low to begin with.
That was a foolish error on my part.
3rd of October, 4711
Perhaps my memory is
failing me. I’ve scoured through all of my books and haven’t been able to find
the notes I need. I was positive it was in Ravengro. I couldn’t be getting this
town confused with another one. Could I?
Success! My memory
wasn’t failing me after all. The false crypt is in the intersection between
Eversleep and the Black Path. I wonder if Father Grimburrow knew about it? I
guess I’ll find out soon enough.
5th of October, 4711
I redrew my will
yesterday and had Hearthmount witness it and store it away. I guess the rumour mill will be working
overtime by the end of today.
I made sure I sat
down and had dinner with Kendra last night. Our first meal together since the
whippoorwills.
I helped myself to
only a few items in the crypt. Anymore wouldn’t do ME any good. I’ve gotten no
sleep tonight as I’ve thought long and hard about who to contact in order to
deal with them. I doubt I’ll take them out by myself.
[This is the last
entry in the journal.]
DUNGEON MASTER: The
storm continues to rage throughout the night.
Morning dawns gray, windy and wet.
SOLAR CE’NEA: After
Solar awakens he checks on Kendra.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
Johan rises from his slumber to the morning light. "That is a pleasent
sight indeed." He looks around before stretching, wincing slightly at his
injures. "I wouldn't mind having these wounds looked at, I think they will
put me at risk if we venture into prison while I'm in this state."
SOLAR CE’NEA: If she
is still sleeping, he leaves her there and quitely exits the room
DUNGEON MASTER:
Kendra answers the door wearing a plain white dress. Her eyes are clear--there is no puffiness
around the edges that might indicate she has been crying this morning. "Good morning," she says, with a
tired, somewhat shamefaced smile.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Good
Morning Lovely lady, we are awaiting your lovely prescense downstairs, I hope
you are better this morning, you look much better, and you are stunning as
always." Solar bows gently and leaves her to come down when she is ready. When Solar sees Johan, he agrees, "we
should get you to full strength, we may need it this day!"
DUNGEON MASTER:
Kendra comes down about twenty minutes later and presently begins preparing
things in the kitchen.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
Mesodias removes the wand of cure light wounds from his belt and uses two
charges to cure the worst of Johan's injuries.
Cure Light Wounds =
1d8+1 = 5 hp
Cure Light Wounds =
1d8+1 = 7 hp
SOLAR CE’NEA: As
Kendra prepares breakfast Solar cast detect magic on the journal
DUNGEON MASTER: The
journal does not radiate magic.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"Yes that did the trick, feel much better." Johan checks his
equipment before following his nose to the dining room for breakfast.
SOLAR CE’NEA: When
Johan returns, Solar goes to him and says, I think we should show Kendra the
journal and let her read it, if she is up to it, she may be able to fill in
gaps.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"What did you discover in it's pages last night?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar
outlines everything he found explaing that other than the references to "I
remember reading clues and hints about a crypt in the Restlands."
and
"The false
crypt is in the intersection between Eversleep and the Black Path. " There was nothing he could find that was
particularly useful
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"Ok well that is interesting. That sounds like a good lead and also one
that we should show as much causion to as we have the prison. The prescence of
a false crypt in this town, does this indicate some of the townsfolk are
involved in whatever is going on?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: I
truely have no idea, let me think about it, but thats why I want to tell
Kendra, maybe she knows something.
SOLAR CE’NEA: The
three merry adventures walk into where Kendra is and Solar walks to Kendra and
says, "It might be a good idea if you sat down for this my dear, we have
some news, I don't know if it is good or bad"
DUNGEON MASTER:
Kendra acquescies, and accepts the proffered journal quietly. For a half hour she reads intently, flipping
back through occasionally to compare newer entries to older ones. Finally she heaves a sigh and looks up at
Solar. "That... thank you for
...this. How did you come by it?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: It was
in the clothing of your father, it fell out last night in the ruckus. I suspect he was buried with it.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Does
any of this mean anything to you, Do you knowwhat he is refering to in his
entries?
DUNGEON MASTER:
"Oh! Well..." she looks
dubiously at the thin journal. "I
supposed we must have missed it when he was prepared for burial."
DUNGEON MASTER: In
response to Solar's question, she replies, "Which entries do you mean,
Solar?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: Well
any to be truthful, but for examples why he was at Tamrivena, what the false
crypt is, or what my be there,
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"I honestly wanted to avoid suspecting the townsfolk but I think we now
need to treat the townsfolk with a raised suspicion. Umm, would you like us to
escort you to the church today if you wish to discuss matters with the priest?"
DUNGEON MASTER:
"I do not know about the false crypt.
Father says he was looking in there for 'supplies', and it looks like he
found some. He did not speak to me about
it.... Tamrivena? That is a town near
the edge of the Shudderwood... I do not know what business father had there,
I'm afraid."
SOLAR CE’NEA: My
dear Kendra, I think we need to go and do some research in the church arcives
about this false crypt to see if any information is there. Did you want to talk to Father Grimburrow
about last night? We could deal with
both things today.
SOLAR CE’NEA: If you
are up to it and want to do that of course
DUNGEON MASTER:
Kendra hesitates only a moment.
"Yes, I think we should. He
should be told of what happened--and I would not mind hearing his explanations
for this.... thing."
SOLAR CE’NEA: Then I
suggest we eat a hearty breakfast and prepare for our sojourn to the church!
DUNGEON MASTER: The
party eats up and heads out into the storm in the direction of the Pharasmin
temple.
DUNGEON MASTER:
Solar and Mesodias sport very natural looking homemade turbans.
DUNGEON MASTER:
WIthin the temple a number of black-robed priests attend to their various
duties. Presently a thin, mid-aged man
approaches. "Welcome back to the
house of our lady. May I be of
service?"
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"Good morning, we wished to take the Father's offer up of accessing the
churches library. Is the Father available for us to greet him in person?"
DUNGEON MASTER:
"Just a moment," replies the priest.
Several minutes later he returns and guides the party back to Father
Grimbrow's study.
DUNGEON MASTER: The
leathery old man regards the party with cocked eyebrows. "Yes?"
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"Thank you for seeing us at such short notice. We wished to ask your
permission in person about accessing your library to assist with our research.
We will treat all of the records with the upmost respect and care."
DUNGEON MASTER:
"Eh? Yes, I'm sure you can. Go on
now," he replies, ever gruffly.
DUNGEON MASTER: The
skinny priest beckonds the party to follow him to the record room.
SOLAR CE’NEA: The
group follows Father to the room.
DUNGEON MASTER: The
record room consists of a number of racks riddled with diamond-shaped shelves
to hold scrolls. The priest lights a
lamp and stands respectfully to the side, motioning the party to research as
they will.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar
gets to work trying to identfiy the catologuing system and looking for records
of the crpts on Eversleep and the Black
Path.
SOLAR CE’NEA: As
well as plot positions on the intersection of the two streets
DUNGEON MASTER:
[Know: local or history, +2 circumstancial for research materials]
SOLAR CE’NEA:
Knowledge check 1d20+12 =30
SOLAR CE’NEA: 32
including circumstancial
DUNGEON MASTER:
There is but one crypt located on the intersection so far as Solar can tell
from the records. According to the
temple records, it was created over 120 years ago. It appears to have been one of the first
filled, with over ten families named as being interred there.
SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar
says to Johan, I think i've got everything I'm going to be able to get for now,
lets go find Kendra!
SOLAR CE’NEA: As
they walk to Kendra, Solar tells Johan what he found but does so descretely in
case others are listening
DUNGEON MASTER: The
skinny priest leads the party back to Grimburrow's study, where they discover
the old man deep in conversation with Kendra.
Her mouth is tight and she seems concerned.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
Johan quietly knocks on the door frame three times. "Excuse us, we are not
interrupting are we?"
DUNGEON MASTER:
"Yes, but never mind that," replies Grimburrow gruffly. "Miss Lorrimore here has told me about
your visitor last night."
SOLAR CE’NEA: Yes,
that was rather disturbing, do you have any ideas about how and why that
happened?
DUNGEON MASTER:
"I have ideas, all right, and I don't like 'em. Kendra also tells me you've been making more
treks up to the old prison, and you've been finding things up there that
shouldn't a been there."
SOLAR CE’NEA: Yes,
there seems to be a perfect storm of spirit activity around the town at the
moment, and what has happended to Gibbs, I suspect was not by his design but by
some evil possession, I fear the town is in danger, I think we can stop it, but
we still need to investigate some things first
DUNGEON MASTER:
"Indeed! Some things such as
what?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: Sense
motive check on The priest 1d20+0=15
DUNGEON MASTER:
Solar notes that the priest seems at ease and genuinely interested in the
heroes' progress.
SOLAR CE’NEA: We
believe that there is a way to defeat the spirits perminately in the prison but
we need to do more research to check out what it is
SOLAR CE’NEA: We
also believe the Professor was also on the same track and we are trying to
follow his footsteps, did he speak to you any time before he died
DUNGEON MASTER:
"Well then best of luck to you.
We'll--ah---send some priests over to take the bodies back to the
Restlands," he says with a nod to Kendra.
"Carry on then."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"Is there anyway the church is able to assist us in our exploration of the
prison, considering the dangers that are present there that pose a risk to the
entire town?"
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"With that I mean healing potions, magical items, protective and healing
spells being made available to us? Forgive me if I am being direct and speaking
out of line but I feel like this is an important service you are in a good position
to help us with."
DUNGEON MASTER:
"Sure we can. I'll have the
alcolytes set you up with blessed water and our own potions for what it costs
to make em.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"We were looking at you to give them to us free of charge."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
Diplomacy check: 1d20+3 = 14
DUNGEON MASTER:
"And I'm looking for a chamber pot made of solid gold," replies the
old man brusquely. "But I ain't
gonna get one and you ain't gonna get that either. Be on your way then, if there's nothing
more."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"Fair enough. Thank you for your time."
SOLAR CE’NEA: If we
find one, we will be happy to donate it to the church! Bye!
DUNGEON MASTER: The
old priest nods as the party is seen out.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Before
heading out to the crypt Solar suggests getting the potions of helaing first
DUNGEON MASTER: It
appears the priests have a few other items for sale as well. Among their currentofferings for sale are a
single dose of incense of meditation, a +1 silver morningstar, a wand of cure
moderate wounds (19 charges), and a scroll of restoration.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"We would like to purchase two of your minor healing potions. Your Father
told us we could purchase it at the cost to create them."
DUNGEON MASTER: The
priests sell the potions at cost.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"Thanks a lot." Johan places the potion into his belt pouch before
leading outside.
DUNGEON MASTER: The
priest nods and makes the spiral sign on his chest.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar
suggests going to the crypt with some stealth, he explains he is worried about
people interfereing or getting the wrong idea
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"I agree about checking it out as the first point of call." He turns
to Kendra, "Are you fine my lady for us to leave you for sometime to
explore for a while?"
SOLAR CE’NEA: Could
I trouble my dear lady for a casting of mage armour?
DUNGEON MASTER:
"I--well, do you think... I mean, I would like to see this place father
visited," she replies.
SOLAR CE’NEA: You
are more than welcome to come with us.
Can I suggest if you are able that you cast mage armour on both of
us. Do you have a weapon?
DUNGEON MASTER:
"I can cast the spell on but one of you," she replies. "I do
have a weapon here," she says, opening her shawl to reveal a small
crossbow.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Then
my lady perhaps you should cast it on yourself
DUNGEON MASTER:
"No! I won't hear of it," she
says, casting mage armor on Solar.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"Don't worry we will keep you safe my lady. Shall we?"
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
Mesodias treks towards the intersection area mentioned in the Professors
journal, trying to avoid drawing undue attention to the group.
Stealth check:
1d20+0 = 17
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
Johan moves along with stealth along side the party to investigate and gain
access to the false crypt.

SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar
and Kendra attempt to stealth along side the other two
Solar 1d20+3=15
Kendra 1d20+0=11
DUNGEON MASTER: The
false crypt mentioned in the professor’s journal is located in the northeast
corner of the Restlands, near the junction of the paths known as the Eversleep
and the Black Path--there is but one crypt at this location, and it is easy to
find. The crypt itself is a freestanding granite mausoleum, the roof of which
is decorated with a pair of leering gargoyle statues. A single stone door with
a rusty-looking lock sits in the mausoleum’s south facade.
DUNGEON MASTER:

SOLAR CE’NEA: SOlar
suggests everyone look closely at the door and walls of the crypt

DUNGEON MASTER: The
keen-eyed party members notice immediately that the lock is broken, its clasp
melted by acid and then put back into place so that to casual observation the
lock appears intact.
SOLAR CE’NEA:
Perhaps You could use your trap sensing abilities Johan?
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"That was my toughts exatly since this has been tampered with. No idea
what else has been changed to keep things out or perhaps inside."
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
Perception check (traps): 1d20+9 = 18
DUNGEON MASTER:
Johan detects no traps.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"Looks fine to me." Johan removes the lock and opens the door with
his greatsword at the ready.
SOLAR CE’NEA: THe
group walks in to the crypt ina "T" formation with Johan and Mesodius
in the fron and Solar at the back. Solar
cast Dancing Lights as soon as they open the door and sends his lights ahead in
his usual formations
DUNGEON MASTER:
Within, a f light of stone steps leads down into the cold earth to a large
crypt lined with corpse-sized niches.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
Mesodias casts Light on his belt as they move slowly forward into the crypt.
DUNGEON MASTER: The
stairs lead down into a 15' x 20' chamber.
The niches are on three walls.

crypt.

Johan moves to the sarcophagus and inspects it for traps.

DUNGEON MASTER:
Johan spots no traps.
An odd, chitinous
squeal sounds through the chamber.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
Johan looks around for the source of the noise. "What was that just
before," he whispers.
SOLAR CE’NEA: Solar
confident that the light on Mesodius will be enough for them right now in close
range sneds his dancing lights dancing around looking for the source of the
noise
DUNGEON MASTER:
Solar spots no anomolies or threats.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
Johan sheaths his greatsword and puts some weight behind the lid of the
sarcophagus.
DUNGEON MASTER: The
lid slides across, revealing a sacophagus devoid of corpses but filled with: a
dozen silver arrows, four sun rods, six flasks labeled "holy water",
17 arrows, five potions labeled "cure light wounds", two potions labeled
"lesser restoration", four scrolls,
and a thin darkwood case decorated with an image of a scarab with a
single eye glaring from its back.
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
Johan nods, "Damn that's a nice find."
SOLAR CE’NEA: Yes I
think we can safely use all of these...however...before we get carried
away....we need to identify what created that sound we just heard....mybe one
of us could load ourselves up while the others keep watch for whatever made the
sound
SOLAR CE’NEA: As
Solar says this he pulls out and readies his crossbow
JOHAN D’ALMENTA:
"Mesodias you have the honor. It's all yours." Johan draws his
greatsword and stands at the ready.
SOLAR CE’NEA: My
Lady I would suggest you have you bow at the ready as well...just in case.
DUNGEON MASTER:
Mesodias takes everything out of the crypt and packs it away in his pack, while
the rest of the party stands ready, facing the doors with weapons at ready.
